A Prayer for Work and Rest

Today I’m glad to share a short prayer from my new e-book, Sabbath Rest for the People of GodThe e-book is a quick, easy read that explores Sabbath rest and offers practical suggestions—not as more “shoulds” but as invitations.

In the meantime, here is the closing prayer from Sabbath Rest for the People of God:

O God of all creation,
I give you thanks for your good gifts
of work and rest.

Help me to find a healthy rhythm
where work gives way to rest,
and rest refreshes and returns me
to work with strength and joy.

May I learn to stop and rest.
Be still.

May I learn to play and celebrate,
to value relationships, and
above all to worship you.

May I learn to resist the go-go,
gimme-gimme pattern of this world,
to follow instead the Lord of the Sabbath
in life-giving rhythms
of work and rest. Amen.

I’m April Yamasaki

Welcome to When You Work for the Church. I’ve been a church volunteer and a full-time pastor. I’ve led small groups and served on denominational committees. When I resigned from pastoral ministry to focus on my writing, I knew that I wanted to be—needed to be—grounded in a local congregation. I love the church!

But I also know that churches and church organizations have not always lived up to their calling, have brought harm instead of healing. So I started this website to share resources for doing ministry better, and pray that together we might serve more faithfully and effectively.

For a healthy rhythm of work and rest, I’d love to send you my ebook.
