When our Sunday school curriculum arrived with wooden figures painted in bright colours, I decided to use them for a Sunday morning children’s story about my week as a pastor. Using the figures in our worship service would also allow the whole congregation to see them.

I’ve told a number of different versions and dreamed up different titles: “God Is My Best Friend” (my original title), “Jesus Is My Best Friend,” “I Talk to God,” and other variations. I usually carry all of my props in a brown paper bag, and bring each one out just when I mention it. By the end of the story, all of the props are lined up in order for the days of the week.

Below is my original story with the props I’ve used in brackets. But please do vary the title, props, and story line for your own context. Think about your own life and what you do during the week. Or turn it around, and tell the story from a child’s point of view. Use whatever you have on hand, and have fun with this.

I Talk to God

Every day, I talk to God, because God is my best friend.
And on Monday (place story figure to the right), I study the Bible, because the Bible tells me about God. (Bible)

On Tuesday (move story figure to Tuesday position), I talk to God, because God is my best friend, and I write down the things that God tells me. (papers and pen)

On Wednesday (move story figure to Wednesday position), I talk to God, because God is my best friend, and sometimes I visit with other people (more story figures) and tell them that God wants to be their best friend too.

On Thursday (move story figure to Thursday position), I talk to God, because God is my best friend, and sometimes I meet with more people (more story figures) to talk about what God wants us to do.

On Friday (move story figure to Friday position), I talk to God, because God is my best friend, and I plan a party for God. I think about what kind of card God might like (Sunday morning bulletins), and what kind of music God might like (musical instrument).

On Saturday (move story figure to Saturday position), I talk to God, because God is my best friend, and I buy groceries (bag of rice, carrots/other fresh vegetable), and I buy a little extra (macaroni, jar of peanut butter) for the food bank, because God likes it when we share.

On Sunday (move story figure to Sunday position), I talk to God, because God is my best friend, and I come to church to see all of you. The people that I visited on Wednesday might come to church (move Wednesday figures to Sunday), and these people (move Thursday figures to Sunday), and more people (more figures from our curriculum) and especially children (more figures from our curriculum). We all have a party with God, with Bible reading and stories and singing, because God is our best friend.

I’d love to know if you use this story and welcome any comments below.

I’m April Yamasaki

Welcome to When You Work for the Church. I’ve been a church volunteer and a full-time pastor. I’ve led small groups and served on denominational committees. When I resigned from pastoral ministry to focus on my writing, I knew that I wanted to be—needed to be—grounded in a local congregation. I love the church!

But I also know that churches and church organizations have not always lived up to their calling, have brought harm instead of healing. So I started this website to share resources for doing ministry better, and pray that together we might serve more faithfully and effectively.

For a healthy rhythm of work and rest, I’d love to send you my ebook.
